#TuesdayBookBlog ‘What Tim Knows’ by Wendy Janes #RBRT #BookReview

Reviewed by me as part of Rosie Amber’s Review Team.

This wonderful collection of short stories takes six characters from Wendy Janes’ novel ‘What Jennifer Knows’ and gives each of them a canvas to themselves. The stories link back cleverly to the novel and give further insights into the characters’ lives and behaviour. Jennifer, the heroine of ‘What Jennifer Knows’, appears in every story at different points in her life. Even though the stories are entwined with the novel, they can be read as a standalone volume with great enjoyment too.
The fifth story, ‘The Perfect Family’, explores the shifting loyalties and cruelties of childhood friendship and how a child’s perception of her parents can change in a crisis.
The emotional gem, for me, is ‘What Tim Knows’. Wendy Janes has a real understanding of what it feels like for a child to be different and how this affects the behaviour and feelings of others too. The closing scene between Tim and his mother Blythe is truly heart-wrenching.
I have no hesitation in recommending this fantastic collection and hope it will send new readers in search of the novel it is so much part of.

My new collection of short stories, ‘Miss Peach’s Dream’, is free to download for five days from today.

Miss Peach's Dream

There are three quick reads in the collection.

The first introduces us to Miss Rosie Peach, a young teacher keen to sort out other people’s problems.

In ‘Best Song in the World’, Celia tries to intervene between her son and daughter-in-law; she has to revisit sad events in her own marriage in order to help the young couple.

The heroine in ‘The Lady with the Funny Hair’ has had enough – after all, even a worm will turn in the end.

At the end of the book during this free promotion, you will find the Prologue and first three chapters of my recently published musical mystery, ‘The Funny Business of Life’.

How to get your free ebook pricematched on Amazon.

After over a year of trying – yes, that’s right, over ONE YEAR – my short story collection, Lemon and Lace, is finally permanently free on amazon UK!

Lemon and Lace: Short Stories UK link

Lemon and Lace: Short Stories USA link

What have I learnt from this experience?

Put your book free on smashwords – PLUS as many other sites as you can (eg Barnes and Noble).

Be persistent and keep asking Amazon to pricematch (although at one point Amazon did ask me – very politely – to stop emailing them about it!). I even went to the London Book Fair and asked for help  at the Amazon stall – they were so polite  but said they actually didn’t know why I had not been able to pricematch my book, as it sounded as if I was doing all the right things already. They did give me a lovely tee shirt though, which says ‘Amazon Loves Authors’ on the front. I wear it for gardening.

Ask your online friends to help, as it seems that other people reporting they have seen your book advertised for free carries more weight than the author constantly bleating on about it.

Ask someone across the pond to report it – this sometimes grabs Amazon’s attention.

Change the price of your book on Amazon to a HIGHER price – apparently this makes it more likely to be picked up by the automatic system that deals with pricematching.

I had a lot of help and support to get my short stories pricematched, particularly from Julia Hughes, Monica La Porta and Sean Campbell.  Thank you!

I may have to go through all this again soon, as I have been advised that sometimes pricematching is changed at the end of a month. So please, download my ebook before the end of May, just in case!

‘Infant Barbarian’ – two short stories to download FREE!

‘Infant Barbarian’, a pair of short stories, is free to download to your kindle or other ereader from Friday 29th to Tuesday 3rd December.

The stories deal with everyday family situations and their sometimes surprising resolutions.

In the first story, Old School, we meet an interfering mother-in-law who is due for a shock. The second story introduces us to an Infant Barbarian spoilt by an indulgent parent. Justice is again dispensed in an unexpected way .

This is a very quick read, ideal for a snatched coffee break. Enjoy!
